The cabinet guide

Home Depot, Lowe’s or a local cabinet refinisher?

The first comparison is the work itself. Retailer refacing programs can supply new doors and update the visible surfaces of suitable cabinet boxes. A local refinisher may instead retain your existing doors and change their finish. These are different purchases, even when both create a refreshed kitchen.

Choose the result before choosing the provider

If you like your doors and layout, ask what it would take to refinish the existing parts. If you want a new profile, overlay or door material, a refacing proposal may address that goal more directly. If the boxes or layout are the problem, request a replacement assessment. The best provider for one scope is not automatically the best fit for another.

Write a short brief that every bidder receives. Include the surfaces that should change, the door style you want, existing damage, hardware needs and what must remain. This prevents a lower-priced repaint from being compared as though it included new doors, or a more expensive refacing package from seeming wasteful when the new doors are precisely what you want.

What the retailers currently describe

Home Depot’s refacing service retains suitable cabinet structure while changing doors, drawer fronts and visible finishes. Lowe’s also offers refacing, with consultation and measurement before a project quote. Availability and exact options should be checked for your address; national pages do not establish the scope of a particular local contract.

Home Depot also lists cabinet painting through Pro Referral, which connects customers with independent professionals. It would therefore be inaccurate to say the company offers only refacing. Distinguish the refacing program from a referral-based painting request, and establish who will contract with you, perform the work and respond if a problem occurs.

Published prices are reference points, not your quote

Reviewed in October 2026, Home Depot’s cost guide lists an approximately $15,000 average and a $7,600–$14,900 minor-project range, while its separate refacing service page shows an $8,100–$16,200 range. Those pages do not present identical figures. Rather than blend them into a false single estimate, use them as dated national context and obtain a written quote for your actual kitchen.

Lowe’s describes a consultation-led quote instead of one blanket refacing price. Your project can differ because of door count, materials, exposed surfaces, accessories, repairs and installation conditions. A retailer’s headline figure is not directly comparable with a local painting figure until you establish what each includes. Ask both providers to separate optional upgrades from the base work.

Compare the materials you will live with

For refacing, identify the new door construction, the finish supplied on it and the material used on exposed box surfaces. Ask how edges, corners, crown and island panels will be treated. Open shelves and glass-front areas deserve special attention because their interiors may remain visible after the main doors are closed.

For refinishing, identify which existing pieces are retained, what repairs are included and how the proposed finish will look on your actual material. On oak, settle the grain texture expectation. On a mixed-material kitchen, make sure every visible surface has a plan. Neither a brand name nor the size of the company replaces this level of detail.

Find out who is responsible at each stage

Ask who takes the measurements, orders the materials, supervises the installation and performs the final inspection. If the seller uses an independent installer, get the installer’s identity and applicable registration or licensing information. If a local company uses subcontractors, ask the same questions. The useful distinction is clear responsibility, not an assumption that one business model always produces better work.

Read the warranty as a set of actual obligations. A manufacturer may cover a product while an installer covers workmanship. A finish warranty may have different exclusions from a new-door warranty. Establish whom you contact, what evidence you should keep and what remedy is offered. Do not treat a sales presentation’s general promise as a substitute for the written terms.

Installation time and project time are different

Home Depot describes many refacing installations as taking three to five days. Lowe’s describes three to five days after the products arrive. Those statements are not promises about the time from your first inquiry to a finished kitchen. Measuring, choosing materials, ordering and scheduling all occur before that installation window.

For any proposal, ask for an expected sequence and the assumptions behind it. What happens if a door arrives damaged or a concealed cabinet problem is discovered? When must the room be emptied? What kitchen access is expected? For a refinishing project, add the coating’s cure and care requirements. Choose using the full calendar and household impact, not the smallest number printed beside the word installation.

Evaluate evidence without assuming a winner

Look for recent examples of the same kind of work you are considering. A beautiful replacement kitchen does not show how a provider handles painted oak, and a smooth painted vanity does not establish experience installing a complex refacing package. Ask to see edges, corners and the areas around hardware, not only a wide view with attractive styling.

Read reviews for specific process information: communication, measurements, protection, follow-through and how problems were resolved. A national brand’s overall rating may combine many locations and services. A small provider’s portfolio may be narrower. Neither fact settles the decision. Use reviews to shape questions, then confirm the details in the proposal for your own project.

A fair local comparison starts with your existing kitchen

NS Wood Finishing focuses on cabinet and fine wood finishing, with doors and drawer fronts sprayed in the shop and cabinet boxes sprayed on site under masking and containment. That approach is worth exploring if your existing parts are worth keeping. It is not a substitute for new doors when changing the profile is your main goal.

Send the same room photos and scope to each provider you are considering. Compare the resulting materials, repairs, appearance, disruption, written terms and total price. If the proposals solve different problems, ask for clarification before deciding one is the better value. The strongest choice is the one that fits your kitchen and is specific enough that you know what you are buying.

Your questions, answered.

01Does Lowe’s reface cabinets?+

Yes. Its current installation page describes cabinet refacing with a consultation and project quote. Check availability, materials and installer details for your address. The advertised installation window begins after products arrive, so ask separately about ordering and scheduling.

02Does Home Depot do cabinet painting?+

Yes. Home Depot lists cabinet painting through its Pro Referral marketplace, in addition to its refacing service. Confirm which program you are using and which independent professional or service provider will be responsible for the contract and work.

03Who has better quality, Home Depot or Lowe’s?+

A retailer-wide ranking does not answer the question for a specific package. Compare the proposed door construction, surface materials, installation scope, local installer and written warranties. The right comparison is between actual quotes for the same desired result.
