NSWOOD FINISHINGGood wood. A new beginning.

Railings & banisters · A connected finish

Stair railing refinishing, from the first step to the landing

Update the finish on suitable handrails, newels and spindles while keeping the existing stair assembly.

Photos are optional. Start with what you know; NS can help with the rest.

The short version.

The details are here when you need them.
A good starting point
A sound railing whose finish needs attention. Structural or loose components need separate assessment.
What to include
Specify handrails, posts and spindles, the paint or wood-finish direction, and nearby surfaces to protect.
What shapes the plan
Access and intricate profiles affect preparation. Show the full staircase, joints and worn areas.

Walk the full route before choosing a color.

Start at the front door and look toward the stairs, then turn around from the landing. The same railing may sit against several backgrounds: a wood floor, a painted wall, a kitchen beyond or bright windows upstairs. A finish that works in one close-up should also work through those connected views.

Photograph the full assembly from below and above, including the landing rail and any return at the wall. These views reveal the real extent of the work. A short stair flight can still have a long landing run and many small components.

Name the parts so the scope stays clear.

The handrail, newel posts, spindles and trim do not have to receive the same treatment. You might keep visible wood on the rail while painting the spindles, or carry one finish through the full assembly. The important point is to identify where each finish starts and stops.

Stair treads are a separate surface with a different use. This railing service does not include floor or tread refinishing. If your broader stair project includes treads, risers, carpet, structural changes or new balusters, tell us who is handling those elements so the finishing sequence can be coordinated.

ComponentUseful decision
HandrailKeep wood visible or change to paint
Newel postsMatch the rail, the spindles or another defined finish
Spindles / balustersColor, existing coating and detail work
Landing rail and adjacent trimWhere the refinishing scope stops
Stair treadsSeparate flooring scope; not part of railing refinishing

Keep wood, paint it, or combine the two.

If you like the character of a wood handrail, ask about a suitable refreshed or changed wood finish. If the existing color is the main frustration, show us a reference that demonstrates the direction you mean. A lighter wood look, a deeper stain and a painted surface are different projects.

For oak, visible grain is another decision. Painting changes the color while the surface texture may remain apparent unless additional grain work is part of the scope. A two-finish railing can connect a painted kitchen with wood floors, but the combination should be chosen for your room rather than assumed from a trend photograph.

The handrail deserves close inspection.

Handrails are touched repeatedly, so worn areas, old cleaning residues and previous spot repairs belong in the initial assessment. Pay attention to the tops of rails, the turns at landings and the places where hands naturally pause. Photograph those areas in addition to the overall staircase.

The existing finish needs to be understood before another is applied. If there are loose joints, movement or damaged parts, flag them separately. Finish work is not structural stair repair. Any necessary correction to the assembly should be resolved with the appropriate scope before the new appearance becomes the focus.

An occupied home needs a practical access plan.

Stairs can be the only route to bedrooms or a work space. Discuss household access before the schedule is set, including children, pets and anyone who needs a steady handrail. Fresh finish and restricted work areas may affect how the route can be used during particular stages.

The plan should identify protection for adjacent floors, walls and nearby furnishings, along with the work sequence and the finish’s handling instructions. Do not assume the rail can be used normally at every stage. We will agree on the practical arrangement for the actual assembly and the people living around it.

Price the details that make your railing different.

Length alone does not describe the full work. The number and shape of spindles, carved profiles, old coating condition, access around landings and number of finish colors all affect the scope. A simple straight run is a different task from a detailed assembly with many turns and narrow spaces.

An estimate should distinguish handrails, posts, spindles and adjacent trim, and state the finish direction for each. If you are also updating cabinets or interior doors, include those projects in the discussion. Coordinated planning can keep the design consistent without assuming every surface needs the same preparation or coating.

Bring the history of the house into the assessment.

In a pre-1978 home, older painted parts may require lead-safe planning before their coatings are disturbed. A recently repainted white spindle can still have older layers beneath it. Share the house year and anything you know about previous replacement or refinishing work.

Your questions, answered.

01Can you paint the spindles and keep a wood handrail?+

Yes, a mixed paint-and-wood direction can be considered. Identify which components receive each finish and share reference images. The existing wood, coating and condition determine what preparation and finish change are appropriate.

02Does this service include stair treads?+

No. This service focuses on railing components such as handrails, newels and spindles. Treads and floor refinishing are a separate scope. Tell us about any flooring work so the order of the projects can be discussed.

03Can you remove the orange appearance from an oak banister?+

We can assess the desired change and the existing finish. Show the wood tone you want rather than using a color description alone. Keeping visible wood, going lighter and painting have different requirements and may produce different levels of variation.

04Will I be able to use my stairs during the project?+

Access depends on the layout, work stage and finish instructions. Discuss the staircase’s role in your household before scheduling. The project needs an agreed plan for movement between floors and for avoiding contact with surfaces that are not ready to use.

05Do you repair loose railings?+

Flag looseness or damaged components during the assessment. Railing refinishing is not a promise of structural stair repair. Any work needed to make the assembly sound should be identified and resolved through the appropriate scope before finishing.
