Your household belongs in the plan

The Census ACS 2020–2024 estimate found children under 18 in 45.4% of Sherwood households. That does not describe every homeowner, but it makes daily routine an especially useful place to begin. The kitchen may be a breakfast station, homework table, landing place for bags and the room everyone crosses on the way out.

Tell us which cabinet doors get the most handling and where you see wear. Photograph the trash pullout, sink area and frequently opened drawers. These are more useful observations than asking for a vaguely “kid-proof” finish. No coating makes cabinetry indestructible. The goal is to assess the existing surfaces, define the right preparation and explain how to use and care for the completed finish.

Make a kitchen-access plan before making a calendar promise

Cabinet doors and drawer fronts are sprayed in our shop; the fixed boxes are sprayed on-site with full masking and containment. Typical kitchen work takes about a week. The exact sequence, access restrictions and care period need to be discussed for your project, particularly when the kitchen is also the route to a laundry room, garage or outdoor space.

List the things your household needs each day: medication storage, a place for breakfast, pet feeding, school lunches and an accessible path through the home. Ask what can stay, what should be moved and when the work area can be used. Those details should be settled before the start date, not improvised after the doors come off. We do not assume every household can use the room the same way.

Why so many Sherwood kitchens are ready for a closer look

The city’s building record is unusually concentrated. Of 5,773 single-family lots with a recorded build year in the October 2026 research, 1,369 were built in 1996 or 1997. Almost half were built during the 1990s. If your cabinets came with a house from that period, they have had many years of daily handling even when the boxes and layout still work well.

Age alone is not a reason to replace them. Separate the structural question from the appearance question. Are the boxes sound? Do the doors operate properly? Is the frustration the orange tone, the visible grain, a worn finish, or a layout that no longer supports the way you cook? A finish update addresses the surfaces. It should not be sold as a cure for a layout problem.

Oak offers more than one kind of update

If inspection confirms oak, there are three useful directions to consider. Paint can change the color while leaving the grain’s texture visible. Grain filling can make the painted surface read more smoothly. A wood-focused refinishing approach can keep the grain visible while addressing the existing color or finish. Your preference belongs in the scope from the beginning.

Use close-up references as well as full-room inspiration. A photograph of white cabinets can hide considerable grain at a distance. Likewise, a lighter-looking wood finish in a different kitchen may come from a different species or different starting condition. Describe the part you like—less orange, a quieter surface, a darker wood tone—so the conversation stays grounded in your cabinets.

Woodhaven and the rooms that connect to the kitchen

Woodhaven includes more than one home type and more than one build phase. The research’s nearby Census block groups are helpful context, but they are not an exact map of the HOA. The association publishes architectural-control information, and the research did not establish a universal rule for interior cabinet work. Check the requirements that apply to your property, including contractor access and work hours if relevant.

For the design itself, include the adjacent family room, built-ins or a nearby stair railing in your photographs. You do not have to refinish everything together. Seeing the connected woodwork helps make a deliberate choice about what stays natural, what changes color and whether an isolated cabinet update will feel complete.

Old Town is a different starting point

Sherwood’s overall housing age can hide its older center. In the research circle within 300 meters of Railroad Street and Cannery Square, 86 of 130 houses with relevant records were built before 1978. That sample is a geographic study area, not an official neighborhood boundary. It explains why a project near Old Town may need different questions from one in a 1990s subdivision.

Include the home’s build year and any known kitchen-remodel date in the first conversation. Flag older painted surfaces, including built-ins you hope to preserve. Ask how the work will be assessed and what protection or testing is appropriate before preparation. A newer-looking cabinet door does not document the age or condition of the surrounding room.

A newer home can need a different color, not a bigger project

In Middlebrook and the newer Cedar Creek developments, the cabinet conversation may be about personal preference rather than wear. Start by identifying exactly what feels wrong: the entire room, a dark island, a mismatched vanity or a builder color that competes with the floor. A focused change can be worth considering before expanding the scope to every cabinet in the house.

Keep records from the builder or cabinet supplier. Ask that provider how a finish change would affect its written warranty. Then compare the work you are considering with the condition of the cabinets now. There is no need to rush into refinishing sound cabinetry simply because another color is fashionable.

Send the wear points, not just the pretty angle

A useful photo request includes the whole kitchen, each wall of cabinets, a door close-up and the places you are concerned about. Add your Sherwood ZIP code, the timing you have in mind and whether you prefer paint, a refreshed wood finish or advice on both. Show an island from every side if it is part of the project.

We can also discuss bathroom vanities, built-ins, interior doors and other confirmed wood-finishing services alongside the kitchen. Keep optional work separate so you can evaluate it clearly. The strongest starting point is a scope that matches your household, rather than a generic package based on the neighborhood or home value.

Your questions, answered.

01Will painted cabinets hold up with children and pets?+

Durability depends on the starting surface, preparation, finish and care. Show us the high-use areas and ask for the coating and care details for the proposed job. Avoid treating any finish as scratch-proof or judging long-term performance from a fresh photograph alone.

02Can we stay home while the cabinets are refinished?+

Discuss occupancy and kitchen access before scheduling. The on-site work area needs a project-specific plan. Tell us about children, pets and any access needs so the restrictions, timing and arrangements can be explained for your home.

03Does Woodhaven require approval for interior refinishing?+

Check with the association responsible for your property. Its published architectural information does not establish one interior-work answer for every home. Ask about any notice, work-hour or access requirements that apply to the actual scope.

04Our address says Sherwood, but the house is in River Terrace. Are we covered?+

Sherwood and Tigard are both in the service area. River Terrace includes homes with Sherwood mailing addresses. Provide the actual location with your photographs; a postal city alone should not determine the plan.
