Keep the layout. Reconsider the finish.
In Prune Hill and the lake neighborhoods, an update often begins with a design decision: retain the warmth of wood, lighten the whole room, or give the island a different role. None of those choices requires every surface to be the same color. What matters is whether the cabinet construction and condition support the result you want.
Camas has a substantial 1990s and 2000s building cohort. In the October 2026 assessor study, 43% of built parcels inside the city dated from 1990 through 2009. The same research also found an older downtown core and newer areas toward Round Lake and Green Mountain. It is a city of several kitchen generations, rather than one standard cabinet style.
Three finish directions, with different questions to answer.
Paint offers a new color while keeping the cabinet layout. Start with the fixed materials around it: the counter, floor, backsplash and adjacent trim. Compare undertones in the room’s actual daylight and evening light. A color that looks quiet on a small screen can read quite differently beside a large expanse of stone or warm flooring.
A wood finish puts more attention on the underlying material and the existing stain. Share whether you want to go lighter, deeper or simply less orange. Those are different requests, and an existing finish can limit the route to the desired result. Two-tone work needs its own scope too: say whether you mean an island, lower cabinets, a pantry wall or a combination.
| Direction | Good starting question | Important scope detail |
|---|---|---|
| Paint a new color | What should the kitchen feel like beside the existing finishes? | Desired grain texture and every surface to be painted |
| Keep a wood finish | How far should the tone move from its current color? | Existing stain, veneer condition and any stripping work |
| Use two finishes | Which part of the room should feel distinct? | Exact color boundaries, island panels and connected trim |
Prune Hill and Lacamas Shores were built in different phases.
The recorded plats make the differences clearer than a single citywide average. The Lacamas Shores, Lake Pointe, Sunningdale and Grass Valley Estates group had a 1997 median construction year. The research’s Prune Hill 1990s group centered on 1998; its later Prune Hill group centered on 2005. Those dates describe homes, not their current cabinets or their quality.
If your doors are original, their age is helpful background. If you have already remodeled, the cabinet installation date is more useful for finish planning. A replaced island can be a different species from the perimeter cabinets. A clear photograph of each keeps those differences from becoming a surprise during a restain or a color match.
| Research area | Median recorded build year | Median house living area |
|---|---|---|
| Lacamas Shores / Lake Pointe group | 1997 | 3,129 sq ft |
| Prune Hill 1990s plat group | 1998 | 2,409 sq ft |
| Prune Hill 2000s plat group | 2005 | 2,903 sq ft |
| Camas Meadows / NW Lake Road group | 2015 | 2,832 sq ft |
| Round Lake / Lacamas Heights group | 2018 | 2,364 sq ft |
| Green Mountain plat group | 2021 | 2,349 sq ft |
A large kitchen needs a complete count.
An expansive room can have surprisingly few doors, while a compact kitchen can have many small drawers, glass fronts and detailed panels. House size cannot give a reliable cabinet quote. The Camas research includes larger homes around Lacamas Lake and later Prune Hill, but it did not measure their kitchens or count their cabinets.
Count each door and each drawer front once. Then photograph the features that a count misses: island ends, decorative legs, crown, open shelving, plate racks and exposed cabinet sides. Mention if you want the backs of glass-front areas changed or if the pantry is part of the project. Our cost guide explains the variables; your actual surfaces establish the scope.
Downtown Camas needs a different first conversation.
A house near the original townsite or one of the early mill-town additions can sit well outside the city’s newer-home image. In the research’s downtown and prewar plat group, 78% of built parcels predated 1978; the east Camas group was 65%. A recently updated kitchen does not, by itself, tell you the age of surrounding finishes.
For these homes, share the house year and any known cabinet remodeling history. Older-home planning should address affected painted surfaces before preparation begins. Photograph original built-ins separately from newer kitchen cabinets, especially if you want their wood character preserved. The goal is a coherent room with a scope that respects its existing details.
Nearby Washougal has its own older and newer homes.
Washougal is also within our service area. Its original town plats and older homesites differ substantially from the 2000s hilltop and eastern subdivisions. In the October 2026 study, the old-town plat group had a 1940 median build year, while the northwestern hilltop group had a 2006 median. A Washougal mailing address should never be treated as evidence of one cabinet type.
If your home is near Lookout Ridge or Granite Highlands, include its phase or build year if you know it. If it is an older house near downtown, flag that early. Either way, photos of the doors, end panels and damaged areas are more useful than a general description such as “builder cabinets.” The finish can be planned around what is actually installed.
Plan the room around the finishing work.
NS Wood Finishing has 20+ years of cabinet and fine wood finishing experience. Doors and drawer fronts are removed for spraying in the shop, while cabinet boxes are sprayed on site with full masking and containment. A typical kitchen takes about a week; the sequence and access arrangements depend on the agreed work.
For Camas households, a useful plan also covers the adjoining living space. Tell us if the kitchen opens directly into a family room, if pets need a separate route through the house, or if other trades have work scheduled. Establish which spaces will be available at each stage and when the selected finish can handle normal use. A calendar should include preparation and careful reassembly as well as spraying.
Before selling, update with a purpose.
If a listing is approaching, decide with your agent which kitchen changes address a visible concern. A targeted finish update can make sense when the layout and cabinets are worth keeping. There is no reliable promise that a particular color will add a particular dollar amount to a Camas sale.
Separate necessary repairs from optional design choices. Then work backward from photography and showing dates, leaving room for the coating’s care requirements. For a home you plan to enjoy longer, prioritize the materials and colors you want to live with. In both cases, the best starting point is the same: clear photos, a realistic scope and an honest comparison with replacement.
Start your Camas project with a conversation.
No photos are needed to submit the form. If you’d like to share some, text NS at 360-903-6298 with your name and project ZIP. Include your neighborhood, ZIP code and approximate house year. Say whether the counters and backsplash will stay, whether the island should contrast, and whether keeping a wood finish is important to you.
You can include vanities, laundry cabinetry or a built-in in the same request. We can then separate the work into clear pieces so you can decide what belongs in the project. You do not need a final paint name before making the first inquiry.

01Can you refinish our original Prune Hill cabinets without replacing the boxes?+
Potentially, if the boxes are sound and the layout works. If helpful, text photos of the doors, interiors near the sink and exposed ends to 360-903-6298. We assess the existing finish and condition before recommending paint, a wood finish or repairs.
02Are Lacamas Shores kitchens automatically more expensive?+
No. The price follows the actual work: the piece count, surface area, condition and chosen finish. Local house-size data cannot establish the size of your kitchen. Include islands, trim and glass-front areas in the photos.
03Can a Green Mountain kitchen have a different builder color?+
A color change can be worth considering even in a newer house. First identify the door material and existing coating. If a builder or cabinet warranty still applies, obtain the relevant terms before authorizing a change.
04Do you also work in Washougal?+
Yes. Washougal is part of our Clark County service area. Send the project location and house year with your photos; downtown homes and newer hillside subdivisions can require different preparation discussions.
05Do I have to choose between all white and all wood?+
No. A two-tone kitchen, a painted island with wood perimeter cabinets, or a coordinated paint and wood combination can all be considered. The materials and condition determine the practical options, and the quote should spell out the boundaries of each finish.
