Start with your neighborhood, then check your own house.

The Beaverton area spans older postwar homes, 1970s subdivisions, later wood-kitchen eras and recent construction. The table uses the October 2026 research analysis of assessor single-family taxlots. Some areas are official city neighborhood associations; others are adjacent unincorporated census-designated places. They should not be read as one city boundary.

This is a useful way to ask the first questions, not a way to identify the cabinets from an address. An older home can have a new kitchen, and a later home can have several cabinet materials. Tell us about any known remodeling, and let photos establish the surfaces that will actually be refinished.

1976 or 1979? A few years can change the first conversation.

The 1970s were Beaverton’s largest single-family building decade in the study. The city had 1,307 recorded houses built in 1978 or 1979, alongside earlier homes from the same decade. Greenway illustrates the split: 80% of its dated single-family houses were from the 1970s, but 59% were built before 1978.

That is why “a 1970s house” is not enough information for older-home planning. Oregon lead-safe requirements apply to relevant work in pre-1978 housing. Provide the individual construction year and any cabinet replacement history so the affected finishes can be considered. The subdivision’s average year cannot settle the requirements for your own kitchen.

Cedar Hills and Vose: assess what is original and what has changed.

Cedar Hills should not be described as a predominantly 1970s neighborhood. The assessor study found a 1960 median year, with substantial 1940s, 1950s and 1960s construction. Vose’s median was 1963. Those dates make an older-home discussion useful, but they do not establish the age, species or survival of the original kitchen cabinets.

When photographing a postwar kitchen, include the sink base, the ends of cabinet runs and any previously repaired areas. Simple door profiles may lend themselves to several finish directions. The decision depends on condition and on whether you want to retain a wood appearance or change the color. If the layout or boxes are the problem, identify that before committing to a surface update.

Murrayhill and Sexton Mountain: look beyond the orange color.

Murrayhill’s recorded single-family homes were concentrated in the later 1980s and 1990s; 94% in the study fell between 1980 and 1999. The area’s median recorded year was 1992. Sexton Mountain had a 1995 median and a wider mix that included substantial 2000s construction. These are construction facts, not a census of oak kitchens.

If your doors are oak, compare three directions: paint with visible grain, paint with grain filling, or a wood finish. If they are a different material, the preparation should follow that material. “White cabinets” does not define how much texture you want. Show a close-up in side light and describe the appearance you expect before comparing estimates.

Cedar Mill, Bethany and the mailing-address question.

Cedar Mill and Bethany are unincorporated Washington County communities with Portland mailing addresses. They are part of the west-side service conversation, but a Portland address does not place a house inside Portland city limits. Likewise, Aloha’s Beaverton mailing address does not make it part of incorporated Beaverton.

The eras also differ. Cedar Mill includes older homes and later subdivisions; Bethany has large 1990s and more recent construction cohorts. Share the actual project location and build year rather than selecting a finish approach from the mailing city. The same practical questions apply: what are the doors made of, how well is the current coating holding, and which surfaces should change?

South Cooper Mountain: newer cabinets, different choices.

The research’s South Cooper Mountain area was an 800-meter study buffer, not an official neighborhood boundary. Its recorded single-family houses had a 2019 median build year. That makes a builder-color change a relevant topic, but it does not establish which door material or factory coating is in an individual kitchen.

Start with the manufacturer’s information if you have it. Photograph door edges, panels and any damaged or peeling areas. Decide whether the change should cover the whole kitchen or just an island or connected feature. If warranty coverage is still active, ask the builder or cabinet supplier how refinishing affects it before authorizing work. A new-looking kitchen still needs a surface-specific plan.

A quote should count surfaces, not use house size as a shortcut.

Count doors and drawer fronts, then add the features a simple count misses: island panels, exposed cabinet ends, trim, open shelving and glass-front interiors. Tell us if the insides should be refinished or if hardware holes need to change. Include any failing old paint, worn edges or moisture damage in the photographs.

The local research measured dwelling sizes, not kitchen piece counts. We therefore do not turn a neighborhood’s average home into a price for your cabinets. Our cabinet painting cost guide explains the scope drivers so you can compare complete proposals. Optional grain filling, extra colors or additional rooms should be clear enough to evaluate separately.

Plan the west-side project around your home.

NS Wood Finishing has 20+ years of cabinet and wood finishing experience. Our process removes doors and drawer fronts for spraying in the shop, while boxes are sprayed on site with full masking and containment. A typical kitchen takes about a week, with the final duration and sequence determined by the agreed work.

For a Beaverton-area visit, provide parking and access details and note other contractors whose work needs coordination. Agree on which kitchen items must be removed and how adjacent living spaces will be used. The selected coating’s care instructions should explain when the finish can handle normal use. Do not schedule a move, photography or intensive cleaning on assumptions about dry time alone.

Bring the room into the conversation.

Your first photo set can be simple: the whole kitchen, each cabinet wall, one door close-up and anything damaged. Include the neighborhood, ZIP code and approximate house year, plus the cabinet replacement date if known. Show the counters and floor that will remain so the finish direction has context.

If a vanity, laundry cabinet or bookcase should be included, you can text those photos to 360-903-6298 with a separate description. You can be undecided about paint versus wood. Explaining what you dislike now and what you want to retain helps turn the inquiry into a useful comparison of options.

Your questions, answered.

01Our Greenway house is from 1979. Can the neighborhood’s 1970s label decide the process?+

No. Use the individual property year and the history of the surfaces affected by the work. Many Beaverton subdivisions include homes on both sides of the pre-1978 threshold.

02Do you serve Cedar Mill and Bethany if the address says Portland?+

Yes, those communities are within our Portland metro service area. Include the project location, neighborhood and ZIP code. Mailing addresses and municipal boundaries are not always the same.

03Can you paint original Murrayhill oak without leaving heavy grain?+

Grain filling can be discussed as part of the preparation scope. Show the current texture and the appearance you want. It is a separate choice from simply choosing a new paint color.

04Is Cedar Hills too old for cabinet refinishing?+

Age alone does not rule it out. The condition, existing finish and affected surfaces determine feasibility, while older-home requirements should be addressed before preparation.

05Can a South Cooper Mountain island be a different color?+

A separate island color can be considered. Include every finished side and identify the material and factory coating if known. Review any active builder or cabinet warranty before approving a change.
